Intermodality: A Symphony of Design and Functionality

Attila Stromajer's Award-Winning Desk Inspired by the Grand Piano

Attila Stromajer's Intermodality, a desk inspired by the grand piano, is a harmonious blend of design, functionality, and musicality. This unique piece of furniture, which won the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2019, stands as a testament to Stromajer's innovative approach to design.

Intermodality draws its inspiration from the grand piano's prominent place and role in both modern and classic homes. Stromajer sought to symbolize the flow of creativity and music through a different modality, creating a desk that not only visually represents a piano but also evokes its auditory essence. The result is a piece of furniture that brings the musicality and creative process into homes through intermodality.

The desk's unique properties lie in its imitation of the grand piano, complete with three legs and a drop-leaf cover. Its modern parametric design is complemented by a rustic finish, creating a striking contrast between traditional and contemporary aesthetics. The desk is as functional as it is visually appealing, with nine drawers for storage and a top that can be folded up without disturbing any items placed on it.

Intermodality was realized using antiqued plywood and copper for the drawer handles and legs. The design features modern, angular, and parametric geometric shapes that contrast with the rustic ambiance enhanced by the special surface treatment. The desk's drawers, which can store documents, stationeries, and office supplies, are removable for added convenience.

The desk measures 180 x 87 x 75 and can be disassembled and mounted on pallets. All its surfaces and drawers can be taken separately, and the legs are detachable. These design specifications make the desk adaptable to various needs and spaces.

Stromajer's design process involved extensive research into geometry and parametric design. He faced the challenge of creating a desk that could imitate a grand piano while remaining functional. The precise adjustment of the triangles' angles, both inside and outside, considering practicality, measures, and proportions, was a significant part of this process.

The Intermodality desk is a testament to Stromajer's innovative approach to design, combining visual and auditory modalities to create a piece of furniture that is not only functional but also a symbol of the flow of music and creativity. This unique blend of design and functionality earned Stromajer the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2019, underscoring his talent and wisdom in the field of design.
